Environment-responsive drug delivery systems for targeted cancer therapy

  • About author:Weiyue Lu, Ph.D. is a Professor of pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy at Fudan University. Professor Lu obtained his B.S. degree in Medicinal Chemistry from Department of Pharmacy, Shanghai First Medical College (Now School of Pharmacy, Fudan University) in 1982, and his Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutics from Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry. He also serves as the director of Key Laboratory of Smart Drug Delivery (Fudan University), Ministry of Education, China, Associate Director of the Pharmaceutics Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association (CPA), Director of the Pharmaceutics Committee of Shanghai Pharmaceutical Association, Council member of Chinese Pharmaceutical Industry Research and Developmen Association and also a member of standing committee, Nano-oncology Committee of Chinese Anti-cancer Association, associate chief editor for Pharmaceutical volume in Pharmaceutical Science Part of Encyclopendia of Chinese Medicine, member of Editorial Board for Drug Delivery and Translational Research, Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica, Chinese Journal of Pharmaceuticals, Journal of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences. Professor Lu’s research focuses on brain, lymphatic system and its tumor targeting strategy and drug delivery system. Since 2000, he has published 80 peer-reviewed papers and holds 20 patents. He has received the National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award (Advisor) in 2012 and 2013. At present, he has host a project on the National Basic Research Program (973) in 2013. He has ever won Shanghai YuCai Award, “Prize for Excellent Teacher” funded by Baosteel Fellowship, Gold Medal of “Xu Guang Qi Science and Technology Medal” and the second prize of scientific and technological progress award of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association.

Abstract:

In order to deliver and/or release anti-cancer therapeutics at the tumor sites, novel environment-responsive drug deliverysystems are designed to specifically respond to tumor microenvironment (such as low pH and hypoxia). Due to their extraordinary advantages, these environment-responsive drug delivery systems can improve antitumor efficacy, and most importantly, they can decrease toxicity associated with the anti-cancer therapeutics. This review highlights different mechanisms of environment-responsive drug delivery systems and their applications for targeted cancer therapy.
